What is Internet of Things?

Connected World.

Introduction:

We all have come a long way in using technology. From having to use the trunk call service to have a personal mobile device with everyone. From having expensive calling plans to data plans that are necessities and not a luxury anymore.

Power and cover of internet.

Internet drives the world. Be it for shopping, news, entertainment, food, travel or other content. It is an undeniable part of our lives. It is now encompasses everything we do and that involvement in everything is Internet of things.

It basically means connecting all the things in the world and connecting them to the internet.

How is it relevant?

Internet of things (IoT), makes the services and things that use them smart.

Internet of Things

Smart how? IoT collects an array of information, stores it and processes it. It does not have to do all of the things together. In fact, in Internet of Things, things can be put into three categories:

1. Things that collect information, store or send it forward.

2. Things that receive information from sources and process/act on them.

3. Things that can do both above.

Proximity sensors

Collecting and Sending/storing information:

The name of the game here - Sensors. Any or all sensors have the main function to collect different data and collect/send it forward. Just like our senses of sight, taste, smell, hearing and touch, the sensors work for the machines or services as their senses.

An example can be a proximity sensor that sends the information to the driver of a car about the distance from the obstruction or the car in front of it.

Vibrate on touch.

Receiving Information and processing/acting on it:

Sensors receive information and respond to it. Example a touch screen vibrating to the touch input that it receives.

Doing Both:

The sensors here collect the information, send it forward to be processed and worked on. Let’s take the same example of the proximity sensor on the cars. Instead of the proximity sensor merely showing the distance to the obstruction, the sensors process the distance & speed required to avoid a collision with the obstruction and then applies the brake of the car and stops it immediately.

Further, with these sensors and their associated systems, data like location information, driver information etc. can be pulled up and used in case of multiple close brakes by a car driven.

The application of Internet of things can be expanded by using information from various kinds of sensors and processing their various data to provide cohesive solutions and extend the usability of many things.
